How to Bring Joy to Seniors in Assisted Living Surprise AZ Through Conversation

Over the course of 85 - 95 years, our elders are a generation who have seen and experienced a lot in life. They have so much wisdom to share and can usually crack a few jokes to make us laugh. However, it is not always easy for seniors in assisted living in Surprise AZ to think of what topics would be interesting conversation starters. In an effort to try and brighten the day of your loved one and get them talking, keep reading to find a list of conversation starter topics to help the conversation flow more easily.

Stay On Topic

Just like anyone, seniors can easily get off topic as they chat. Try your best to guide them to stay on topic by asking follow up questions on the topic or subject that you are discussing. Ask open-ended questions rather than questions that require a “yes” or “no” answer. Stay engaged in the conversation by including your own experiences and interactions relating to theirs.

Choose the Right Environment

Choose an appropriate environment to have your conversation. Be aware of avoiding noisy places where your voices are competing with background music, television, or other chitter chatter.

Topics for Conversation Starters

Below are a list of ten topics that can assist you in connecting with your beloved senior and establishing a strong relationship while visiting with them in assisted living Surprise AZ homes.

  1. Ask about their past – Learn what it was like being a kid before tv was mainstreamed. What did they like to do for fun with their friends or siblings? What were their favorite tv shows then versus now? You may recognize some of them as classics. Seniors enjoy looking back on the past and reminiscing about the good ol’ days. Ask “what are some fond memories you have as an older person now reflecting on childhood years gone by?”

  2. Learn about their achievements in life – what have they accomplished and what was the pinnacle of their career? Which accomplishments or achievements gave their life meaning or changed the course of their lives? What was their favorite time of life? This could be a certain decade such as raising children, traveling, or retirement. Ask, “what do you consider to be your greatest achievement?”

  3. Ask about their favorite things – what are some things that they love to do for fun? This information can also come in handy for managers and owners of assisted living Surprise AZ homes. At Brookhaven Assisted Living, we are able to cater to the likes and hobbies of our residents when it comes to in-home entertainment. Find out what season is their favorite and why? If they had to eat only one food forever, which would it be? Ask about the first thing that comes to mind when they think of today’s date. If today’s date doesn’t have meaning, ask them about a date that does. It could be a wedding anniversary, the birth of a child, or a day marked in history. Ask them if they have any regrets or if there’s anything they would have done differently in life. If they could go back and change one thing in their past, what would it be and why?

  4. What fun activities did they enjoy doing? Think of sports, past times, or people that they enjoyed spending time with. Assisted living Surprise AZ residents love looking back on the past with fond memories. If they were able to use a time machine, what would they want to see or do? If they could go back in history and meet anyone, who would it be? Be sure to ask follow-up questions on these topics. What are some things about the past that they miss and wish existed now?

  5. Ask what their first pet was or the first pet they wanted - This is thought provoking, and also an interesting topic, since you never quite know what the answer will be. Learn what they named the pet and what they did to take care of it. If your loved one is anything like my dad, you may learn that they used to share an ice cream cone with their dog while sitting on the front porch on a hot summer day!

  6. What was it like to grow up in that era – what were some of the challenges, as well as benefits they might have experienced? What did they do for fun or for date nights? What advice would you give to the younger generation about life and how to live it to its fullest? Assisted living Surprise AZ residents always have a lot of wisdom to share based on their experiences. We can learn a lot from their successes and failures.

  7. What games did they used to play with their friends? What do they consider to be the best toy they ever had? Games and toys have changed and advanced so much through the years, asking these questions will really demonstrate the vast differences. Many of these toys are still on the market, we just have the new and improved version. Life was much more simple in the 1930’s - 1950’s when these seniors were growing up. Their idea of fun as a child may be much different than what your children experience today. For example, there were no video games back then or high-tech toys. They often played with simple toys, climbed trees, or played in the dirt and mud with sticks and rocks.

  8. If they could have any superpower, what would it be and why? It’s always interesting to envision skills and powers that give us an ability beyond what is known to be possible. Some answers assisted living Surprise AZ residents could include time traveling, being invisible, or having the ability to fly. Ask who is their most favorite hero or heroine from history? Why do they admire this person? If they could say one thing to this person and ask one question, what would it be? Keep in mind it does not have to be someone famous. It could be a personal connection to someone that inspires them to do good or be better each day.

  9. What career advice would they give to someone who is just starting out? The circumstances have changed significantly over the years, especially over the last 10 or so years. Is their advice still relevant to today? Find out how technology and working in their specific industry has changed over the years. Find out what their first job was, how much they were paid, and where they worked. It is always interesting to hear how much items and goods used to cost compared to today’s prices. How did they like to spend their money? What were their career goals?

  10. What is the biggest lesson you learned from your teenage years? In some cases, assisted living Surprise AZ residents may relive glory days, in others, it may just be fond memories of growing up. Either way, it’s likely to deliver a valuable lesson that may provide an opportunity for learning.
